My name is Nancy. I have spasticity as a result of my cerebral palsy. I have a Medtronic baclofen pump. It is because of this baclofen pump from Medtronic that I heard about your Faces of Courage Spasticity contest for your calendar. I have a friend who has cerebral palsy and spasticity that I feel would fit this profile. My friend’s name is Cherie. The reasons I admire her are as follows:
1. In 1980 she started fighting for and with the help of other people supported the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. In fact, she was there in 1990 when former senior President Bush signed it into law.
2. She is on the CABS committee. CABS stands for Committee Advocate Bus Service.
3. Cherie is a member of the PADS group, of which I am a member. PADS stands for Peer Advocate Disability Support.
4. When I met her she had started a class called LWD or Living Well with a Disability because she wanted to teach us how to go through life and be productive members of society.
5. During the Living Well with Disability class she got breast cancer. In spite of her cancer she continued to work and to go to as many classes as she could.
Cherie has also been my mentor as well as to help me reduce stress levels. She is the kind of woman I want to become; she is my idol and I really think she has what it takes for your calendar because she is always on the go.
For all she has done for me personally, as well as for other people with disabilities, I will never be able to adequately thank her.
